The company’s latest effort, the long-awaited LA Noire,has pushed the boat out even further still with its astonishing interactivity. Never before has a game afforded the user such control over the way its storyline pans out.

Players take control of Detective Cole Phelps, voiced and acted by Aaron Staton of Mad Men fame, through a series of crime-cases in 1940s Los Angeles. You’ll needa keen eye for detail and sharp mindto be a top notch detective here. Phelps starts out as an up-and-coming investigator, so it’s your job to get him to the top.

The motion capture technology is undoubtedlythe most impressive feature of this Xbox 360 game. Each character is portrayed by a real-life actor with movement sensors, which adds tremendously to the overall realism. Gone are the days of Pacman-style mouth movements in character interactions.

You can even see the movement of the muscles in their faces, which, again, can lead you down totally different paths, depending on your interpretation.If you miss the shifty eyes, you might lose the case.

On the diverse range of crime scenes, you can interact with pretty much anything, but not all of it, as you would expect, is relevant. You can spend hours scrutinising everything you see or you can pick a select few pieces of litter and work from there. It is entirely up to you to determine the significance of each piece of evidence.

The cases do not grind to a halt if you take a wrong turn, though; you are simply marked on how successful you were in reading facial expressions and interpreting evidence from the crime scenes.

Perhaps the biggest frustration with LA Noire is that it’s not free-roam like other popular Rockstar titles such as Grand Theft Auto IV and Red Dead Redemption, though there are side missions if you fancy a break from the big main-story cases. It can perhaps feel a little restricted in this respect, but the story is so effortlessly enthralling that that is quickly forgotten about.

There are so many aspects to this game that add to the overall believability and excitement of it all. It genuinely makes you feel like you are a 1940s LA detective, picking apart and exposing clandestine goings-on around the city, and, if the instant success of LA Noire is anything to go by, motion sensor technology is definitely going to play a big part in the future of HD gaming.
